Computers for student use are located in four large computer rooms.  The equipment is Windows-based with a large range of software available. Six interactive whiteboards are distributed across the school to enhance teaching and learning.

Year 7 and Year 8 students undertake an introductory computer course to orient themselves with the MHS computer set up.  Keyboard skills, the Microsoft Office package and the use of other integrated packages are emphasised.  Learning Technologies (LTs) such as computers, digital still and video cameras, data loggers and scanners are used in all curriculum areas as tools for effective teaching and improved learning outcomes in accordance with the “Learning Technology Plan 2004-2006” and Melrose High’s own Learning Technology Plan.  Melrose High embeds LTs into all learning areas.

Students in years 9 and 10 can choose from a range of elective courses.

CERTIFICATE 1 IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (COMPUTER APPLICATIONS) (Yr 10 Sem. 1&2)
This unit is for Year 10 students only. Upon successful completion of this unit students will receive the industry recognised qualification of Certificate 1 in Information Technology. Students who do not complete the certificate will receive a Statement of Attainment. Student will also receive an individual report and grade for their work. The course delves extensively into word processing, spreadsheets, database applications, presentation packages, email and Internet searching. This is an excellent unit for expanding student’s knowledge of the computer. It will be of great help in completing schoolwork and almost any vocational direction a student may be considering. It provides an excellent base for any subsequent unit in Information and Communication Technology.

MULTIMEDIA : STILL IMAGES (All Semesters)
Students who elect this course will study digital photography and Claymation. During one term students will study digital images, developing an understanding of raster and vector file formats and create, repair and manipulate images using PhotoShop. The other term will see students investigating Claymation techniques such as used in Wallace and Grommet. As a group, they will design, develop and produce cartoons using these Claymation techniques.

MULTIMEDIA: MOVING IMAGES (All Semesters)
Students who elect this course will study design principles, computer animation and film production. For one term students will investigate the design principles and as individuals create short computer-animated films using programs such as Flash. During the other term students will work in groups to construct storyboards and scripts, record a film using digital video cameras and edit the production into a finished short film.

WEB DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT (All Semesters)
Students who elect this course will learn how to create static web pages from HTML code and through applications. Students will study HTML tagging for building their own web pages using HTML and constructing a website. Students will then investigate website construction using another application such as Dreamweaver. Projects within this course are skill specific. As a result the content of the websites is negotiated between individual students and the teacher.

3D ANIMATION (All Semesters)
Students will create short 3D animations using the program 3D Studio Max. Students will learn to model, animate, texture and render 3D scenes and objects. They will be able to explore face morphing and biped animation. This is a great unit to select if students are thinking of exploring a career in games graphics.

GAMES PROGRAMMING (All Semesters)
Students delve into the world of simple games programming while learning algorithm design and problem solving. Students build knowledge of analysis and solution of problems, basic control structures and pseudocode for implementing their solutions to create games using GameMaker. Students who are interested in programming will require a good knowledge of Mathematics.

MYCLASSES

The use of MyClasses across all learning areas complements the teaching and learning program in each class.  Parents, through MyClasses, have access to learning with which their child is involved.  MyClasses provides secure access to students class information through the use of user names and passwords which are allocated to each student.  The website to access MyClasses is http://www.melrosehs.act.edu.au/myclasses.

COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING PROGRAM (CALP)

Our Computer Assisted Learning Program (CALP) initiative offers students with notebook computers the opportunity to learn in an environment where learning technologies are an integral part of each learning area.  Teachers working with classes and students in CALP are also encouraged to use similar approaches with other classes via the student computer room facilities.  A wireless network is installed in the school to complement the existing broadband network through which students and staff access the safe, private intranet system MyClasses to support their studies further.
