Physical Education

In all years students will be involved in PE every week.  Students in Years 9 and 10 select their semester units from the option list.

Luchtime Activities

In additon to interschool sport, social sporting competitions are conducted during lunchtime.

The activities offered are dependent upon student interest and staff availability.
In recent times  these have included such things as indoor soccer and  volleyball.

School Sport

Melrose High School continues to excel in school sport.  A wide range of competitions for boys and girls are conducted in Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 age divisions.  These competitions take place during normal school hours and are generally one day competitions at a central venue. 

Highlights of the sporting calendar include the Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field Carnivals.  These are whole school events with the emphasis on participation for all.  Better performing athletes then have an opportunity to progress to Southside Zone and ACT level.

Course outline

Year 7

Students undertake a year long foundation course that builds on existing knowledge and skills base.  Emphasis is on the development of motor skills and fitness to enable all students to be effective lifelong participants.  The course also assists students to develop self esteem and a positive attitude towards their health, as well as encouraging them to make choices that contribute to living an active, healthy life. Core units of study include fitness activities and assessment, cross country, social dance, athletics, sexuality, growth and development, and drug education.  Other units are selected from a wide range of sports and games.

Year 8

Students continue to develop the themes explored in Year 7 Physical Education, including positive attitudes toward physical activity and living an active, healthy lifestyle.  Motor skills are further refined and game skills such as rules, umpiring, safety, fair play, cooperation and the development of strategic thinking are introduced.
Excursions
Excursions utilising a range of community faciliities are an integral part of the Physical Education program.  Parents and carers are notified in writing of course requirements, including excursion details and costs.

Year 9 & 10 Elective Program

The varied and inclusive nature of our senior courses makes them a feature of the school’s curriculum and very popular with students.  Students select semester long courses from the following:

A core curriculum of health, athletics and social dance is conducted in all senior  electives.
