Enrolment Process & Year 6 Transition Program

Students who live in our priority enrolment area (PEA) are given automatic enrolment at Melrose High.  Students outside the PEA should complete an “Expression of Interest” form as early as possible to ensure that a position is secured for the following year.  This form is available from the Melrose High front office.  All parents, seeking a place for their child at Melrose High must also complete a Departmental Request for High School Enrolment Form, which will be available online at the departmental website www.det.act.gov.au (follow links to 2009 Enrolments/High School).  The Request for High School Enrolment Form must be returned to the first preferred high school by Friday 20th June, 2008.  Students not attending a government primary school may return their cards to their nearest government primary or high school.

In term 2 prospective Year 7 students are invited to an Orientation Day at Melrose High School.  Orientation days for Year 6 students provide students with opportunities to sample hands-on learning in high school while also allowing them to see around the school.  The aim of the day is to give Year 6 students an idea of what is expected of them in high school classes, to familiarise them with our surroundings and make them feel comfortable and positive about coming to high school.

During terms 2 and 3, parents of prospective students are invited to participate in a guided tour of the school while classes are operating.  The tour takes approximately 45 minutes and bookings are essential.  Bookings can be made by contacting the school on 62057588.

An Information Evening is held for parents of prospective Year 7 students in term 2.  Representatives from each of the Administrative Teams and from the Curriculum Areas are available at this evening to answer questions about the school.  While the evening is aimed mainly at giving parents an introduction to the school's facilities and programs, prospective students are most welcome to accompany their parents.

Year 10 Transition to College

The school holds information evenings to support families and students in their choices.  Also during the year, representatives from local Year 11/12 colleges address all Year 10 students.  These meetings are conducted at Melrose High School for the benefit of prospective Year 11 students.  Topics such as course content, assessment, career prerequisites and tertiary requirements are covered in these initial meetings.  Year 10 students also have the opportunity to attend an Open Day at Canberra College to look at the college facilities and to hear more about the college programs.  The school also organises a special tour to local colleges for Year 10 International Students for their smooth transition to a college, separate from scheduled visits.

Parent Timetable Orientation - Mini Timetable Night

Parents of Year 7 students are invited to participate in a Mini Timetable Night, usually held in week 5 of term 1.  The aim of this evening is to give parents practical experience of how the teaching program is organised.  Parents follow their child's timetable through the full cycle, enabling them to meet their child's teachers in their classrooms and receive information about course content, homework and assessment.
