The Melrose High School Board
School Boards were established in the ACT to allow the maximum participation of teachers, parents and students, in cooperation with the Department of Education and Training, to develop the educational environment within individual schools.
The Board is composed of three elected parent representatives, two elected teacher representatives, the Principal (ex officio), one nominee of the Department of Education and Training, and two elected student representatives.
The Board is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the school budgets, considering submissions for curriculum change, helping prepare duty statements for Principal appointments and representing the school community in making submissions to the Department of Education and Training or other government or non-government groups.
The Melrose High School Board has played an important role in promoting the interests of the school and its students and looks to the continued assistance of parents, students and staff in its future work.

Parents and Citizens Association
The Association strives to promote the educational welfare and interests of the school by:• encouraging close cooperation among parents, students, School Board, teaching staff and the community
• stimulating the interest of members in the school and in educational developments, especially those in the ACT
• providing a canteen service in the school
• supplementing the material/financial requirements of the school.
The Association conducts elections for the three parent representatives on the School Board.
The A.G.M of the Association is held early in term 1 each year. All Committee positions are declared vacant and new candidates are most welcome.
The Association usually meets in general session once a term while the elected executive committee meet monthly during school terms. Members are invited to raise matters of interest to them at the meetings. The names of the current office bearers may be obtained from the school Office.
All parents and carers of children attending the school and all interested citizens are eligible for Association membership. Subscription to the Association is included in the family contributions to the school. Active membership of the Association greatly benefits the whole school community - students, staff and parents.
Student Representative Council
Members of the Student Representative Council are elected by their Year groups. Formal voting takes place early in the school year, after nominees have addressed Year Assemblies. The ACT Electoral Commission supervises voting.
The Student Representative Council is formed as follows:
• 5 members are chosen from Year 10
• 5 members are chosen from Year 9
• 3 members are chosen from each of Years 7 and 8
• 2 members are chosen from International Students
From these students, a Year 9 and a Year 10 student are chosen to act as Student Representatives on the School Board. The Student Representative Council elects an Executive of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.
The functions of the Student Representative Council are varied and include:
• representing the school on behalf of the student community
• organising student involvement in school charity work
• organising school socials
• representing student views to staff, Principal and School Board
• assisting in running school assemblies
• providing exemplary behaviour and leadership for the student body.
The Student Representative Council promotes activities such as socials, school beautification and fund raising. The largest single event for the Student Representative Council is the organisation of Charities Day. This event involves students addressing school assemblies, planning stalls, and liaising with businesses. The proceeds from this day of stalls, fancy dress and activities are donated to various local charities.
The Student Representative Council has a substantial budget each year from the money raised at school socials. In recent years some of the money has been spent on improvements around the school, equipment purchases and sponsoring of students who have been selected to represent the ACT in interstate competitions. The SRC also sponsors two children in developing countries.
Canteen
The school canteen is operated by the P&C and is located in its own building. Currently Spotless has the contract to supply healthy food options for students and staff. Students are able to purchase food and drinks at recess and at lunch.
The Uniform Shop
The Uniform Shop stocks a range of school clothes – school dress, polo shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and PE T-shirts. This is run by the P&C Association
